Originaire de Mayotte, le guitariste et chanteur M’toro Chamou se définit comme l’héritier d’une identité mahoraise qui combine héritages swahili, malgache, bantou et français. C’est en arrivant à Marseille qu’il décide de valoriser le style populaire de Mayotte, le mgodro et de montrer la richesse musicale de son île. Sa rencontre en 1996 avec Baco puis avec Mikidache, les maitres de la musique mahoraise, ses modèles, va être très inspirante. En 1999, Il signe un premier album Kaza Ngoma suivi de trois autres dont le dernier, M’Lango, chante l’histoire et les valeurs mahoraises. Marquée par le succès de Youssou NDour qu’il découvre en arrivant à Paris, sa musique revendique son héritage africain, swahili, bantou, malgache mais s’est également nourri de divers styles comme le reggae et le blues. Il se produit actuellement sur scène avec trois musiciens : Johan Saartave à la basse, Didier Dijoux à la batterie et Miguy Petrel qui assure la deuxième voix.

Guitarist and singer M’toro Chamou is from Mayotte island and defines himself as the heir of an identity combining Swahili, Malagasy, Bantu and French legacies. He chose to promote the mgodro, the popular style of Mayotte and to show the musical richness of his island when he arrived in Marseille influenced by IAM group’s manager. His meeting in 1996 with Baco and then with Mikidache, the masters of Mayottean music, his mentors, has been very inspiring. In 1999, he released his first album Kaza Ngoma followed by three others. The new one , M’Lango, is about the history and the Mayottean values. Influenced by the success of Youssou Ndour, an artist he discovered when he arrived in Paris, he plays a music claiming his African legacy, Swahili, Bantou, Malagasy but also enriched with various styles such as reggae and blues. He is currently performing on stage with three musicians: Johan Saartave on bass, Didier Dijoux on drums and Miguy Petrel, second singer.
